· Professors at the Weizmann Institute of Since in Rehovot, Israel, suggest that artificial flavoring agents are not safe for human intake. In fact they might even cause diabetes instead of preventing it.
· As a contradictory industry bodies confirm that zero artificial flavoring aids weight control. The US Food and Drug Administration states that all approved sweeteners have no harm to human consumers.
· These substances have zero calories because are bodies are unable to digest them.
· Scientist in Israel, despite confirmations of the FDA, decided to carry out some experiments believing that the intake of these sweeteners were linked to diabetes . In these, healthy mice were fed with water containing three different most commonly used artificial sweeteners with the equivalent maximum dose recommended by the food authorities. These were then compared to mice drinking regular water.
· After 11 weeks all mice were given a high-glucose drink. The mice who had been drinking regular water showed a regular response to the glucose and secreted insulin in a correct manner resulting to have no intolerance against glucose. Whereas the mice who had been drinking sweetened water showed an intolerance to glucose which is strongly associated to type 2 diabetes.
· The glucose intolerance may be caused by the contact of the artificial sweeteners without being digested with gut bacteria causing them to change their composition. This was proved with a second test; once the bacteria were removed the rodents did not suffer the intolerance anymore.
· Similar test were carried out on humans giving the same results as in the mice.
· Big powers of the artificial sweetener industry such as the International Sweeteners Association and Ajonomoto Sweeteners Europe reject these conclusions made against their products.
· The hypothesis is still yet to be approved.
